The most common UK wasp species are the common wasp (Vespula vulgaris) and the German wasp (Vespula germanica). Both build large, paper-like nests and can become aggressive, especially towards the end of summer.
Wasp season typically begins in April and finishes in September. A wasp colony is primarily active during the summer months between June and August, with up to a 1000 virgin queens exiting a nest in the first two weeks of autumn. These virgins queens will mate and then hibernate over winter and emerge in the following spring.
